When Martha Lynn Barnes invited me to her new salon, Mirror Mirror, for a cut and highlights, I was a little nervous — I'm pretty particular about my hair! But, Martha Lynn has worked at José Luis, one of my favorite salons in town, as well as Luxe Apothetique. She is also a stylist for fashion shoots, weddings and more, and her website, marthalynnbarnes.com, showcases a variety of her work, so I could take a peek before arriving. She has styled for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Ballet Austin, the Home Shopping Network and BMW of Austin, to name a few.
Designed by Architect Becky Jeanes and Interior Designer Erin Cook, Mirror Mirror, boasts a warm and welcoming interior, with shabby chic accents in the comfortable lounge area. And, of course, each stylist station is furnished with an oversized mirror that looks like it is straight out of Snow White.
Before getting started, Martha Lynn and I discussed what I was looking for — natural highlights and a simple cut with minimal layers. To achieve a natural look, she used two different colors for the highlights, with no bleach, since my hair is already on its way to being fried by the summer sun!
As a pretty antsy person, sitting still for highlights is usually hard for me, but Martha Lynn is fast, and thorough, getting really close to my roots!
Mirror Mirror is a Kérastase Consultant Salon, and Martha Lynn selected the Resistance Line for my hair. She explains: "For highlighted hair, we often use the Kérastase Resistance Line, which is perfect for fine and vulnerable hair." After shampooing withKérastase Bain de Force, Martha Lynn applied Kerastase's Concentré Vita-Ciment. This treatment, available only in salons, fortifies the hair fiber to add strength and resilience. Days later, my hair is still silky and smooth, without being weighed down!
To style my hair, Martha Lynn used the Kérastase Spray Volumactive Spray, which she says "adds body and fullness by wrapping polymers around each individual hair. It is also heat shielding and anti-static."
She finished it off with Kérastase Elixir Ultime, which she calls "the ultimate in serums," explaining that "it adds strength, shine and moisture and can be used as a treatment for blowing hair out and smoothing." It also smells fantastic!
The end result was a natural looking blond and a simple cut, which is exactly what I asked for! She did recommend adding a few layers in front, which turned out great. I can't wait to go back to try the salon's other services, which include makeup applications, skin care, massages and beauty treatments.
